Put away the defibrillator, Nikola Jokic has a pulse!!!
Coming off a tough East roadtrip and swinging into a three game home-stand back in The Mile-High City, Denver finished up 3-3 over that stretch. With tight losses against solid East playoff teams and wins over bubble teams in the West and the reeling Knicks, it may not seem like much to be happy about.
The team as a whole was nothing special, but Nikola Jokic is starting to look like a star again! During that 6 game span, Jokic put up 23.7 pts, 10.5 rbs, and 7.3 assists while shooting 55% from the field and 35.5% from 3 on over 5 attempts per game. Numbers are great, but the way he’s doing it is what’s a breath of fresh air.
Jokic got to the free throw line with much more regularity than in recent stretches of the season. He played with so much more overall engagement and was much more active and assertive in the offense. Less of the head scratching, bewildering gaffs have been occurring when turnovers or mistakes disrupt the flow of the offense. He’s taking shots with confidence and they are finally falling.
While this stretch has been fantastic and what we’ve been hoping for all year, I’m not holding my breath. This is very much a wait and see situation. I still don’t believe that this has just been a being out of shape issue as I discussed on my most recent podcast. This is so promising, but the Nuggets need Jokic stepping up to stardom for 57 more games this season to maximize their potential. If he steps up for only 29 or 35, they’re going to be on the outside looking in.
Jokic is a top 10 player in the league when he plays locked in and engage. This recent two week stretch has been promising and hopefully is a sign of more success in Jokic’s and the Nuggets’ future.
